How to read cigar sale prices without being fooled by the crossed-out number
A method for comparing current price, MSRP, retailer regular price, pack count and real unit cost.
A discount percentage needs a reference point
A retailer can only claim a percentage discount relative to some higher number. That reference might be manufacturer suggested retail price, the store’s former price or another comparison value. Those are not always the same thing. A 35% discount from a high MSRP can still be more expensive than another store selling the same cigar at an ordinary everyday price.
The practical comparison is the current selling price of the exact same cigar and pack, normalized to the same unit basis.
Separate marketing savings from market savings
Marketing savings answer the question: how far below this retailer’s reference price is the offer? Market savings answer a different question: how does the offer compare with other current sellers and with the product’s own recent price history? The second question is usually more useful for a price-comparison site.
That is why Cigar Price Watch can show a retailer regular price but ranks comparable offers by current normalized price rather than by the largest crossed-out percentage.
Watch for pack-size changes
Retailers may run a promotion on a five-pack while the normal listing is a box of ten or twenty. The total price can look dramatically lower even if the per-cigar saving is modest. Always confirm the quantity before interpreting a sale.
Bonus cigars also complicate unit cost. If a promotion clearly states “buy 10, receive 2 identical cigars” and the bonus is actually included, the effective cigar count may be 12. If the bonus product differs, it should not be treated as the same-cigar pack without qualification.
Delivered cost can reverse the ranking
A lower product price does not guarantee the lowest delivered price. Shipping thresholds, state excise taxes, sales tax and retailer-specific fees can change the final order total. Because these costs depend on destination and basket size, many public comparison tables present product price first and label shipping or taxes separately.
